Structure of All Saints Baptism Register, 1906-1921

This baptism register is a bound book that consists of:

  • a title page;
  • an A-Z surname index with handwritten entries (the index has a large gap, described later below)
  • a section title page
  • an entry section that consists of 201 pre-printed 2-page-wide register pages that are sequentially numbered from "1" through "201".  Each baptism register page has space to enter 9 baptisms.  The register pages are filled with handwritten entries that are numbered sequentially from entry 1 on register page 1 through entry 1802 at the bottom of register page 201. The earliest baptism in the register is entry 1 dated 9 October 1906; the latest baptism in the register is entry 1801 dated 24 April 1921 on register page 201. (Entry 1802 is an "add-in" entry with an earlier date of 6 February 1920.) After register page 201 is a makeshift handwritten page 202 that contains "add-in" entries for baptisms with earlier dates of 15 Jan 1920 and 11 Dec 1920.

Guide to Online Images of All Saints Baptism Register, 1906-1921

On website FamilySearch.org, this baptism register is identified as "Baptisms 1906-1921 with index" under the heading "All Saints Parish (Chicago: S State)".  Here is the summary of information about the images in this set:

  • 229 images total
  • Images 1-2:  proof pages associated with copying the records
  • Image 3: register title page ("Registrum Baptizatorum; Lithuanicae Ecclesiae Omnium Sanctorum, Kensington, Ill., Archidiocesis Chicagiensis" (Baptism Register; Lithuanian Church of All Saints; Kensington, Illinois; Archdiocese of Chicago))
  • Images 4-26:  A-Z surname index to this baptism register (by entry number)
  • Image 27: section title page ("Registrum Baptizatorum" (Baptism Register))
  • Images 28-228: Images of 2-page-wide register entry pages from register page 1 through register page 201.
  • Image 229:  "makeshift" register page 202 (last page in this register book).

About the Index Pages in All Saints Baptism Register, 1906-1921

There is a gap in this index.  Except for surnames beginning with A-C, baptisms after 20 September 1915 are not listed in this index.  In general, the index pages appear to be very reliable for finding entries through 20 September 1915 (when Rev. F. B. Serafinas was the pastor) but the index was not maintained after that except for what appears to be an attempt many years later to update the index retroactively. That attempt apparently made it only through indexes for A-C.

About the Format of Register Pages in All Saints Baptism Register, 1906-1921

These pages contain the actual entries about the baptisms that took place in the parish. Refer to the image below, which is an image of register page 156; this page contains the entry for the baptism of my mother.  The format of this register page is typical of all register pages in this baptism register.

The title portion of each 2-page-wide register page has:
  • a pre-printed entry "Annus ______" (Year ______) at the upper left-hand side of the left-hand page, followed by
  • the words "Registrum Baptizatorum" (Register of Baptisms (or Baptism Marriage Register)) pre-printed at center top of the left-hand page, followed by
  • a pre-printed entry "in Ecclesia _______________" (in the Church _______________) at center top of the right-hand page, followed by
  • a page number pre-printed at the the upper left corner of the left-hand page and at the upper right corner of the right-hand page.

The blank after "Annus" was meant to be filled out with the year that applied to the entries on the page. On register page 156, this was left blank. The blank after "in Ecclesia" was meant to be filled out with the name of the church (in Latin) in which the baptisms on that register page occurred.  On register page 156, this was left blank. For All Saints church, the typical entry was "Omnium Sanctorum" but after the first few years this entry was typically omitted.  [The pages for the initial period prior to the use of the first parish church in mid-1908 have the same designation.] The overall title would be "Registrum Baptizatorum in Ecclesia Omnium Sanctorum", which translates to "Register of Baptisms in the Church of All Saints", which I would further shorten to "All Saints Church Baptism Register".

(red rectangle added to highlight example entry)

The column-heading portion of each 2-page-wide register page contains 9 column headings, with the first 6 being on the left-hand page.  The column headings are listed below, with my comments about typical entries:

  • Column 1: Numerus Currens (sequential number). The sequential number of this entry in this baptism register.
  • Column 2: NOMEN INFANTIS ET RESIDENTIA (infant's name and residence).  In this register, the given name of the baptized infant was entered in Latin.  See general comments below about given names. In this register, the residence is typically entered as the name of a neighborhood within Chicago, with "Roseland" and "Kensington" seen frequently.
  • Column 3: DIES MENSIS ANNUS; Nativitatis (day, month, year of birth).  Although the typical entry is in Latin, it is easily translated.  The Latin word "die" means "on the day", and the Latin names of months are similar to the English names but with different endings.
  • Column 4: DIES MENSIS ANNUS; Baptismi (day, month, year of baptism).  Same comment as for Column 3 above.
  • Column 5: NOMEN PARENTUM (name of parents).  See general comments below about given names and surnames.
  • Column 6: LOCUS NATIVITATIS (place of birth). This refers to the places of birth of the parents of the baptized child.  In this register, the place of birth is typically entered as "Lithuania" or an abbreviation of same, with no added detail.
  • Column 7: NOMEN PATRINORUM (name of godparents). See general comments below about given names and surnames.
  • Column 8: NOMEN MINISTRI (name of minister) (= name of priest). In this register:  The typical entry is "F.B. Serafinas" until register page 137 and is "P. Lapelis" for later entries.
  • Column 9: ADNOTATIONES (notations).  In this register, the entry in this column is typically blank.
