Location of Parish Church and Rectory

The entries in the online marriage, baptism and death registers of St. George (Lithuanian) RC parish start in April 1893 and go through the end of 1925.

  • Church Location 1893(?)-1902.  The first church of this parish was a wooden church that was located at either (1) W 33rd St & Auburn Ave or (2) W 33rd St & Archer Ave.  (location needed, with source).  Excerpts from an article in the May-June 1995 issue of Lithuanian Heritage magazine which cited a description by Rev. Lapelis: "... Rev. Jurgis Kolesinskis, who had come to Chicago in 1892.  Rev. Kolesinskis founded the parish that same year.  Twelve lots were purchased at the corner of 33rd Street and Auburn Avenue on Chicago's near South side, and a small wooden church built.  Rev. Kolesinskis was replaced at the end of 1893 by Rev. Mateušas Kriaučiūnas, who had recently arrived from Lithuania.  ...  After purchasing two additional lots, Rev. Kriaučiūnas built a brick rectory. With time and new Lithuanian immigrants arriving in the area, the wooden church became too small to hold the parishioners. A new and larger brick Gothic-style church began to be constructed in 1896, but shortage of funds delayed its completion until 1902."   A slightly different view about the initial location was presented in an article in the March-April 2006 issue of Lithuanian Heritage magazine that cited a description by Dr. Kučas from the book Lithuanians in America: "The Rev. Jurgis Kolesinskas, who was designated pastor of this parish in 1892, bought a wooden German church and had it moved to the Lithuanian plot of land at 33rd St. and Archer Ave."
  • Church Location 1902-1990.  This church was located on the northwest corner of West 33rd Street & South Auburn Avenue, with its main entrance being on West 33rd Street.  On 1 January 1934 the name of Auburn Avenue in this area (i.e., between W 31st St and W 39th St) was changed to "Lituanica Avenue".  This church was dedicated on ___ 1902, and it was closed in 1990.
  • Rectory Location (~1895-1990).  The rectory was located at (3230 South Auburn Avenue?).  On 1 January 1934 the name of Auburn Avenue was changed to "Lituanica Avenue".
